A few years ago, authors Sona Charaipotra and Samira Ahmed asked me to write a short story as part of their HOME HAS NO BORDERS anthology, which is a collection written by and about South Asians. The them was ‘home’ whether that’s in South Asia or within the Diaspora.
This was the last piece of writing I was able to complete before my pregnancy from hell (during which time I wasn’t really able to do anything).
And then I had my baby, and I have mom brain, and Sona and Samira and Meghan (our editor) have been super kind in giving me space about the anthology, and I ACCIDENTALLY forgot that it was coming out today!???
I sent an email to Meghan this morning because my incredible assistant Debra was like “woman, ask for the cover files so I can make you some graphics for your Instagram.” Megan’s reply was so kind with a “happy release day today!”
So shame on me. But Yeay for HOME HAS NO BORDERS being out in the world!
My story, which appears on page 259 is called ‘NO TASTE LIKE HOME’ and it’s about two students in University (The same one that’s in THE LETTERS WE KEEP) who get their care packages mixed up. One is South Indian and one is North Indian.
Warning: do not read when hungry.
To find out what happens, I urge you to pick up the anthology and check it out! And thanks to Samira and Sona for inviting me to be a part of a project where I get to write next to some incredible authors. One of them is Tanuja Desai Hidier who wrote ‘BORN CONFUSED’, my favorite YA ever, and the first time I saw myself in a book. What an achievement, right!?

Thanks friends! xoxo, Nisha
